People are buried in coffins for a combination of practical reasons, including protection of the body, facilitating transportation and funeral rituals, and expressing respect for the deceased. While it’s not universally illegal to be buried without a coffin some towns allow for natural or green burials where the body is interred directly into the earth, often in a shroud or biodegradable container.
