Open conversation about colorful things that fall from space. Today scientists believe there are over 20,000 pieces of space junk that are at least four inches long. These pieces orbit Earth at speeds of up to five miles per second. Occasionally, these objects will fall from orbit and strike Earth’s atmosphere. The overall risk of being hit by space junk is extremely small compared to other hazards we face daily. It is estimated to be less than a one in one trillion chance that a any human being will be injured by falling space junk. To decrease fear of space junk this painting depicts space junk as colorful and harmless.
